Enabling GeoSWMM 2D Modeling
Any GeoSWMM 2D modeling approach requires preparing the floodplain and flow paths over the land using the topography of the area. To achieve this with accuracy and manage a separate 2D model within GeoSWMM project, it’s necessary to enable 2D modeling in the same GeoSWMM 1D project workspace. Only after the successful migration will GeoSWMM allow the user to access, define, create and update the corresponding layers using GeoSWMM 2D modeling tools. As previously mentioned,, a simulated 1D model is a pre-requisite for initiating the development of a 2D project. To migrate the 1D project to 2D project, follow these steps:
-
Click the 2D Modeling dropdown from the GeoSWMM menu bar
-
Click the Enable 2D Modeling option.

Tips Once the user enables 2D modeling, the 1D GeoSWMM project database will be converted to a 2D project within the same workspace. It is recommended to keep a copy of the original GeoSWMM 1D project using the available “Save a copy” option from project menu before enabling 2D modeling. This precaution ensures that you have a backup of the 1D model, as the GeoSWMM 2D doesn’t allow users to go back to the native 1D model. ![]() |
After enabling the 2D modeling, all the required 2D layers will be generated, and 1D model will convert to a 2D model. Note that the generated 2D layers will not contain any features until the process framework is followed. The migration will generate the following 2D layers within the project database:
-
Boundary Layer
-
Junctions 2D
-
Conduits 2D
-
Cells 2D
-
Orifices 2D
-
Weirs 2D
