Conclusion

This tutorial demonstrated how to use continuous simulation along with statistical analysis to evaluate the long-term behavior of a drainage system. Ten years of continuous rainfall data (daily resolution) and evaporation were used to analyze the performance of the conveyance system and detention pond designed in Tutorial 03. The key points illustrated in this tutorial were:

  1. Evaporation is an important component of the long-term water budget that should be considered in continuous simulation. In this example it accounted for 42.12 % of the total rainfall input to the catchment.
  2. Model setup for continuous simulation is quite straightforward in GeoSWMM, providing that reliable long-term rainfall records and evaporation data are available.
  3. High time resolution on rainfall data is required if accurate predictions of peak runoff flows are needed. The hourly time interval of the rainfall data used in this tutorial may cause peak discharges to be underestimated.
